Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use Web Registration or can I just go by the office and register?

Yes, you have to register with Career Services through the web. In partnership with we maintain a database that connects to thousands of jobs. Once you are registered on-line, you will have to access  to all our campus opportunities as well as thousands of other opportunities through MonsterTRAK.

Can I keep more than one resume on file with Career Services?

Yes, you can have more than one resume registered with us. MonsterTRAK allows for up to ten different resumes to be stored. However, you will have to designate a default resume that will automatically be selected by our office. Otherwise, you can go into your file and select which of the ten different resumes you would like to submit to an employer.

Who can sign up for interviews? And when is the best time to start interviewing?

Any student who is registered through our office, has attended an Interview Skills Workshop, and meets the criteria as specified by the recruiter, may submit their resume for consideration for an interview. It is best to start EARLY and interview with as many companies as possible. Be aware that many recruiters are interviewing in the early fall for December, May, and August graduates and for co-op/summer interns.

Does the Career Services Center invite employers for Engineering and Business majors only?

The center actively seeks potential employers for all majors. It is a fact that nationwide, more campus interviews occur for technical and business graduates than liberal arts, education, agriculture or human sciences majors. We would welcome your suggestions on recruiting additional employers to campus. The center offers broader job search strategies than just on-campus interviewing. If your major is not heavily recruited, you must undertake a direct application search. Take advantage of our career services aimed at helping you explore the various alternatives.

How important are references, and who are the best people to get them from?

References are generally requested at a second interview or on a job application. The best people to secure references from are former professors and employers. Personal references from friends and clergy are not recommended. Be sure that you ask permission to list a person as a reference. It is also helpful if you give that person a copy of your resume for use during a reference check.

Can I make contact with an employer on my own?

By all means, contact employers yourself! You may utilize the Career Resource Room to locate names, addresses, and corporate information. Again, take advantage of every opportunity that will help you in your job search.

Should I also interview outside of Career Services?

Yes! Although many employers come on campus, many others do not. The interview opportunities provided on campus should be just one aspect of your employment search. Take advantage of any job opportunity: Attend other career fairs, seek assistance through the Texas Workforce Commission, utilize the Internet and the public libraries.

Does the Career Services Center assist International students?

International students confront some unique difficulties in their job search. The center can offer advice, information, and limited interviewing opportunities. Although a vast majority of employers who interview on campus request unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. on a full time basis (such as permanent residency, political asylum, or refugee status), some do not and are willing to discuss employment opportunities with international students. Most companies are restricted to students who complete a Master's degree; interview opportunities for undergraduate international students are extremely limited. Even if you do not meet the criteria for an interview, we can submit your resume to recruiters for review.

How can I go about researching a company that I want to interview with?

Start by checking with the Career Service Center. Many times, the employer has sent materials for students to review. Also utilize the Career Resource Room, which has several directories, trade magazines, and newspapers. And always check on-line at the company web site.

What are key qualities that employers seek in students?

Employers tell us overwhelmingly that they are looking for people who have the following abilities: communication and interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, teambuilding skills, leadership skills, personal initiative, flexibility and dependability. You can work on developing these skills through participation in student organizations, civic clubs and volunteering, as well as through work experiences prior to graduation.

What if I don't know what I want to be "when I grow up"?

The Career Resource Room has an interactive computer guidance program that can assist you in examining your interests, values and abilities. You can make an appointment to use this program, then plan to sit down with a career counselor to review the results and explore other options regarding majors and career choices.

How do I go about writing a cover letter?

The Career Resource Room has many books on how to write cover letters. These books can be checked out for a week at a time. we also have handouts and samples of cover letters in our office. An excellent publication, Job Choices, is available to students at no cost. This magazine contains many excellent articles on "how-to" topics for job-hunters.

What about using the Internet for my job search?

Absolutely! The Internet is an invaluable tool that can assist you in finding information about corporations and job bulletin boards. Many companies are now placing their applications on-line and are accepting resumes submitted through e-mail. There are some suggested addresses that will help get you started on a Web Search.
