Adopt-a-Highway. The Adopt-a-Highway program is a statewide program that encourages organizations to take part in keeping our environment clean. Participating groups are given 2 miles of Texas Highway to maintain. The organization's name is posted on the highway to mark its location and give the groups recognition. The community benefits from a cleaner environment and the groups receive publicity for their hard work.
Make a Difference Day. Make a Difference Day is a day set aside to beautify our surroundings. Organizations are given specific projects to work on that improves the environment. Everyone's small projects make a big difference at the end of the day.
Beach Clean-ups. Beach. Clean-ups are held periodically to keep Texas beaches attractive to visitors. They are kept this way by group efforts. Different groups provide the supplies and refreshments sponsor the clean-ups.
High School & Elementary School Demos. Performing chemistry demonstrations is a great way of introducing the power of chemistry to youths. There are several types of demos to do in order to reach different age groups. People are always interested to see the chemistry they use everyday and how it works. Demos are also a way of involving students in hands-on involvement. This raises awareness of our field and encourages young kids to pursue a science-related career.
Runs/Walks. Participating in runs/walks is another type of community service. They are held to raise money for various organizations. An entry fee is charged to raise funds for research and development in medicinal science. Monies also benefit students on educational trips.
Local Parades. The cities of Kingsville and Corpus Christi host various parades throughout the year. Participation in the parades promotes organizations and their purposes. Our society can represent Texas A&M University-Kingsville and the American Chemical Society; we can also communicate the importance of chemistry to our community.
Project Bookshare. Project Bookshare collects chemistry books and makes them available to libraries of small U.S. colleges and to university libraries in some developing countries. Our organization could make a donation of hooks and provide the up-to-date information to other benefit colleges and universities.
Partnering with Other Organizations. Larger projects can be planned with the help of other clubs and organizations. Partnering gives groups a chance to work with different groups and collect a wider range of ideas. The larger number of students contributes more ideas along with their time to make successful plans.
Display Cases. The Chemistry Department has display cases that are available for announcements. These display cases can be used to announce past achievements, current projects, and upcoming events. Making attractive displays will interest the students and increase membership and involvement.
South Texan. The school newspaper is a great way to encourage events that are open to the campus, there will be several fundraisers, tours, field trips, and school meetings the campus can participate in. Most students read the newspaper, and there is no cost.
Kingsville Record. The Kingsville Record can be used to publicize events open to the public. This is also an inexpensive way to reach the public and ask for their help raising money or invite them to make use of our services. The Kingsville Record can make announcements of our achievements us well.
Chapter Website. The chemistry department maintains the ACS Student Affiliates website. It provides web users with a description of the club and announcements. This year the website will be updated regularly and will include a better description, member list. Calendar of events, programs, news, and a large photo gallery. It will also make announcements of any jobs that come up and will be linked to other websites for finding chemistry-related jobs.
Sidewalk Announcements. The sidewalks around campus, and all over the city, can be used to raise awareness of chemistry and involve the community in our activities. It's inexpensive and easy to clean.
Society Brochure. Our organization can create a pamphlet to explain our society and purpose. It can include other information pertaining to the club and will make the most of the best graphics.
Parades. Another way to showcase our club is to participate in parades. We can communicate our importance and bring light to a field most people don't usually think about. We can appeal to the community witi-1 our creative talents.
Freshman Engineering Social. The Department of Engineering hosts a Freshman Engineering Social each fall. The purpose of this social is to familiarize incoming freshmen with the department faculty and students. Engineering students need a strong background in chemistry, so they should also become familiar with our department. The ACS Student Affiliates help the Engineering Department set up and represent our department and organization as well.
National Mole Day. National Mole Day is celebrated to honor Amadeo Avogadro who first proposed the concept of the mole. This year, the theme is "Celebrate the MOLEnnium." Our chapter could celebrate this day by announcing it to the school, holding a Mole Day party, and setting up a display describing its history and importance.
Youths in Science & Engineering Program, The YES Program is a program set up to show young kids about what the sciences have to offer. This is a chance to show the impact of science and engineering and its uses. Through direct demonstrations and regular uses of these subjects, kids can see their importance and become more interested.
Engineering Day. The Engineering Department hosts Engineering Day to remember the contributions of this field since chemistry plays a large role in these contributions, the ACS Student Affiliates are invited to share this experience. Our club can demonstrate thee possibilities of chemistry.
Earth Day. Earth Day is a day set aside to appreciate our environment. People all over the world do projects in honor of the Earth. Events, such as Earth Day/Bay Day, the Spring Garden Festival, and the Plant a Tree Program, take place around the area.
Garland Memorial Lecture. The Chemistry Department sponsors the Garland Lecture every spring. A professional who uses chemistry speaks to our students and faculty of their experience with chemistry. They give us new insights or information on how it's used. The ACS Student Affiliates volunteer at the lecture that is open to the campus.
Hoggie Days. The university holds a freshman orientation program to show incoming freshmen the facilities and services available for fi-ie students. The students become acquainted with the campus. Part of the orientation allows school organizations to interact with these freshmen and show what they have to offer. Our organization can use Hoggie Days to recruit members.
Annual ACS Book Scholarship. The ACS Student Affiliates award a scholarship al the end of the year to the most active student in our organization, The award is based upon a point system recorded throughout the year. The scholarship is worth $100 and is used for books.
ACS Room Decorating. The ACS Room is used as a study room and lounge to be used by Student Affiliates. We Can begin a tradition of donating various pieces of artwork or photos of famous chemists and apparatuses to decorate the ACS room.. Every year the club can donate a number of items for the room as well as one major piece created by the group. This can vary from a group picture or a mosaic artwork designed by the group and will show the year the piece was donated.
Student Funding Organization Committee. The Student Funding Organization Committee is responsible for disbursing funds to all campus organizations. These funds will be disbursed at a meeting on September 6, 2000.
ACS Goggle Sale. All A&M-Kingsville students are required to take chemistry. One of the necessities in the chemistry labs is goggle. We provide them to students at a low cost to add to our funds. Our group depends on volunteers to sign up to sell them at the beginning of each semester.
Bayfest. Bayfest is a festival held in Corpus Christi. At the festival there is live entertainment, and food and souvenir booths. The Student Affiliates can participate in this local festival and represent our school while making profits.
Fall Carnival. The Fail Carnival is one of the activities during Homecoming Week. This carnival gives our organization a chance to mingle with the student body and make money. Decorated, colored water-filled flasks have been sold in the past to raise funds for the club. We can use this idea again or do something else for the fall carnival.
Spring Fling. The Spring Fling is another opportunity to raise money. It is another festival hosted by the school. There is food and games for the students to enjoy. Our club can benefit from the festival by selling something or charging for a quick game.
Chemistry T-shirt Sale. During Chemistry Day, T-shirts are sold to bring in more money. The organization is responsible for its new design each year. Any remaining shirts are sold to chemistry students or the following year during Chemistry Day.
CRC Handbook Sale. The CRC Handbook is a very valuable source of information for all scientists and engineers. Few students have their own copy because of its high cost. We have the chance to sell them at a discounted price and earn a few copies for ourselves.
Pool/Softball tournament. The ACS Student Affiliates can host a pool or softball tournament to raise funds. An entry fee can be collected from every participant or group. This will pay for costs of renting pool tables or any other equipment that might be needed as well as money prizes.
Car Washes. Money can always be made at car washes. Weather is usually favorable, and supplies are inexpensive or can be donated. The students can have a little fun while earning some money for the club
Raffle. Raffles are another good idea to raise money. The club can get items donated by area companies. If all items are donated, the club can benefit from 100% of the profits.
BBQ. BBQ's are more involved in planning but raise more money than other fundraisers. The club can purchase the meat. Club members can donate all other items and the time needed to cook everything. With lots of participation and cooperation, the society can benefit greatly.
Magic Show. Our organization can hold a magic show at the local mall or at the school. A lot of chemistry seems like magic to those who don't know the reasoning behind the tricks. We can charge a minimal price to view the show that will be put on by the Student Affiliates.
Chemistry Craft Sale. Our members can also be creative and make chemistry crafts. We can sell these as souvenirs during National Chemistry Week or other chemistry events.
National Chemistry Week. NCW is a way for chemists to celebrate and share experiences of chemistry. There are various outreach programs all over the country to raise awareness of the field. Our chapter can do our part to emphasize the everyday importance of this science. This year the theme for NCW is "Kitchen Chemistry."
School Demonstrations. During NCW schools across America get involved in this promotion in their own ways. One of the basic ways our club can take part is to perform school demos. Visiting the schools and showing kids the importance of chemistry encourages kids to wonder about this science essential to our everyday lives.
SUB Display. Many students puss through the Student Union building when they get something to eat, go to class or hang out in the game room. Information could be passed on about the field of chemistry by using fliers, pamphlets, and a display board. Although most students are already studying for a degree in another field, they can learn to appreciate chemistry and its effects in our lives.
Sidewalk Ads. On campus we can utilize the sidewalks to announce NCW. We can also publicize the activities we are hosting during this week. It is an effective way to reach all students and involve the campus in this celebration.
NCW Festival. Our society can also sponsor a festival to honor this amazing science. The NCW Festival can have: demo booths, refreshment booths, game booths, and sales booths. The festival can be held in a very open place to attract lots of people. We can also hold a firework display us a grand finale of the event.
Chemists Reacting to Hunger. There is a nationwide food collection drive for charities. We can participate in this effort and involve the school and community. Our group can hold contests and awards for contributing organizations.
Scientific Meetings. Scientific meetings are held for the exchange of ideas and information. The sectional meetings are held locally each month. These meetings serve as great opportunities for students to learn new ideas or gain new insights in chemistry. It's also a great way to interact with professional chemists.
Incentives for Attendance. In order to increase attendance and representation at the sectional meetings, the Student Affiliates may pay for half or all of the price of attending. Carpooling to the meetings is a logical and money-saving way to travel to any of the out-of-town meetings. Attending these meetings will also increase a members chance to win ACS and Javelinium products in our monthly lottery. The members will accumulate points that may be redeemed at the end of each semester on a fun activity.
Attend Regional/National Meetings. Regional and national meetings are another way of learning new ideas and interacting with professional chemists. Because these are larger meetings then the sectionals, there are a wider variety of ideas and more people involved. These meetings last 2-3 day to accommodate all of the lectures. The students benefit from special events and workshops held at these meetings. They also get to travel to a different place and become more aware of other cultures.
ACS Welcome Back Party. The first meeting of each semester draws large numbers of students. This is a great change to inform students of the purpose and advantages of our society, and recruit members. The students can learn of the semester's overall plans and become familiar with other members and faculty. Having a social event following the meeting appeals to the students.
Student Affiliates Scavenger Hunt. Another way our members can socialize with one another is a scavenger hunt. This hunt can tie in our knowledge of chemistry by using chemistry-related items. An award can be presented to the group that arrives first with all of the items or the group with the most items during a set time.
Homecoming Representatives. Our organization can participate in school social activities. We can be a part of Homecoming activities by having representatives from our club. These representatives are nominees that campaign for Homecoming King and Queen and publicize our club.
Homecoming Mud Volleyball. The first activity that kicks off Homecoming Week is the Mud Volleyball game. We can promote our club by taking part and have fun with other students. This is another opportunity for our members to know each other better.
Campus Scavenger Hunt. We can invite the school to participate in a scavenger hunt sponsored by our organization. This can involve the whole student body and advertise our club. We can use basic fun items for the hunt and again award the first team with all or most of the items.
End-of-Semester Party. Our club usually hosts a social at the end of each semester. All department faculty, students, and staff are invited. We can host our party with a theme using chemistry-related food and decorations.
