Description

Courteis discovered Iodine in 1811, and occurs sparingly in the form of iodides in sea water from which it is assimilated by seaweeds. Iodine exhibits some metallic like properties and dissolves readily in chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, or carbon disulfide to form beautiful purple solutions.  Iodine is found in nature.  The iodide, and thyrozin which contains iodine, are used internally in medicine, and a solution of Kl and iodine in alcohol is used for external wounds.  When handling pure iodine care should be taken because if contact with the skin can cause lesions and irritate the eyes.
