Hydrogen is the lightest and most abundant element making up about 90% of the universe.   Hydrogen in the form of water (H2O) is needed for everyday life and is found in all organic compounds. Hydrogen gas was once used in air-balloons but proved to be disastrous because of the risk of fire.
