Dr. Manuel Flores, Professor

Dr. Manuel Flores

Dr. Manuel Flores is a professor of communications/journalism at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He also serves as the university’s Faculty Athletic Representative and is the production manager for the Journal of South Texas. He is past chair of the Art, Communications and Theatre Department at TAMUK and has been a member of the university’s Faculty Senate. Dr. Flores is involved in the Kingsville community and currently serves on the Chamber of Commerce Board and is on its Legislative Committee. He is also a board member for the South Texas Historical Association.

Dr. Flores helped start the Tejano Civil Rights Museum and Resource Center in Corpus Christi in 2014 and continues to serve as an advisory board member and coordinator of activities at the museum. He is a Tejano historian who has made numerous presentations statewide on a variety of topics involving Tejanos – from history to politics and opportunities.

He has written one book and contributed to several others. His book “Hispanics in Journalism: More Than 200 Years of Spanish-language Influence in U.S. Communications” was published in 2008. He was also the chief contributing author and researcher for “Jim Hogg County – 100 Years Centennial Celebration” published in 2014.

He has also done several major studies in communications, including “A Study of the Impact of the NAHJ Parity Project on Coverage of Hispanic Issues at a Texas Daily Newspaper.” The results of this study were implemented by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and were shared nationwide by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Dr. Flores is also an expert on Title IX legislation and its impact in athletics and academics.

He has written numerous articles on academic journals and has a weekly book review column – Texana Reads – in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

At TAMU-Kingsville he has also served the sponsor and advisor for the award-winning student newspaper – The South Texan – and of the university’s American Advertising Federation Chapter and advertising team that competes nationally. He previous worked in public relations Central Power and Light Co., was an award-winning sports columnist and reporter for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, and taught political science and journalism at Del Mar College. He also served 12 years as a member of the Corpus Christi ISD board, the last two as president. He was also president of the Mexican American School Board Association of Texas and is on the board of the Kingsville Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Flores is married to Adriana Garza-Flores, director of communications at Texas A& M Kingsville.

He retired as Captain from Texas Army National Guard.
