General Education Development (GED)
The GED includes tests in five different areas Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. The questions in each of these tests require you to use general knowledge and thinking skills. Few questions ask about facts, details, or definitions. You are eligible to take tests if you are not enrolled in and have not graduated from high school and if you meet the eligibility requirements.
The GED Tests can be administered only to persons who meet all of the following:
Have not graduated from an accredited high school or received a high school equivalency certificate or diploma
Are not currently enrolled in a regular high school except for approved GED high school
Must be at least 18 years old (16 & 17 year olds are allowed with required documentation)
Must reside in Texas at the time of testing
Seventeen-year-olds must present a written statement signed by a school official of the last school attended and complete the parent/ guardian consent form stating that the student is no longer enrolled in school and has permission to take the GED test..
Sixteen-year-olds may test only if recommended by a public agency having custody under a court order. The recommendation must be in writing on letterhead and include the applicant’s name, date of birth, and case number. It must be signed by an official of that public agency.
The passing standard for Texas is a minimum score of 410 on each test and an average of 450 overall (2250 total points, combined score).
