Dr. Ronald John “Ronn” Hy was named acting provost of the university in March 2008, after Dr. Kay Clayton announced she was leaving the university June 30 to become vice president for academic affairs and provost at Texas Woman’s University. Effective July 1, he will become interim provost until the position is permanently filled. Hy has been at Texas A&M-Kingsville since August 2002. As dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, he oversaw 12 departments and 55 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Prior to coming to A&M-Kingsville, Hy was chair of the Department of Geography, Political Science and Sociology and Director of the Community Development Institute at the University of Central Arkansas. He has authored or co-authored five books and eight chapters in other books. His research focuses on economic modeling of various tax and education finance issues. Hy uses various computer models and forecasting techniques to look at both the positive and negative impacts of various economic development proposals and policies, focusing especially on the effects – in terms of money and jobs – that result from attracting new businesses, expanding existing businesses, and closing businesses. Hy earned B.S. and M.A. degrees from Central Michigan University and a Ph.D. from the University of Miami.
