KINGSVILLE (April 26, 2019) — The Opera Workshop at Texas A&M University-Kingsville will present two performances of The Merry Widow by Franz Lehár. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in Jones Auditorium.

The Merry Widow tells the story of Sonia Glawari, a rich, young widow from the fictional country of Marsovia that is on the verge of bankruptcy. Baron Popoff hatches a plan that if the Widow Glawari marries a Marsovian, her millions will save their country from financial ruin.

The show follows the many suitors of the widow who love her for both her beauty and her money. The production is filled with eye-catching costumes, sparkling Viennese waltz tunes, and joyous dancing.

The Merry Widow is directed by Dr. Melinda Brou, associate professor of voice and director of the Opera Workshop. There also will be a full orchestra for the production, directed by Dr. Veronica Salinas Lopez, assistant professor of orchestral studies.
