Health and Kinesiology Student Receives Highest Undergraduate Honor From ACSM Regional Chapter

Meagan Cantu, a senior at Texas A&M University- Kingsville has been named the recipient of the 2017 Texas American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Undergraduate Scholar Award from the Texas Regional Chapter of the ACSM.

Cantu is the third consecutive A&M-Kingsville student to receive this top award—an honor unique to A&M-Kingsville, as no other school in the state has produced the top ACSM undergraduate scholar three years in a row. This also marks the fifth time in history that an A&M-Kingsville student receives the award.

Texas ACSM is one of 12 regional chapters of the American College of Sports Medicine. ACSM is the largest exercise science and sports medicine professional society in the world, with over 50,000 members dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of the exercise sciences and sports medicine.

The award is given to the top undergraduate exercise science student in the state of Texas. Cantu received the award during the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Texas ACSM in Waco Feb. 16-17.

Cantu is majoring in Exercise Science/Pre-PT and plays on the Javelina Golf Team. She is also the Department of Health and Kinesiology’s Exercise Science Major of the Year and will be entering the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Texas Woman’s University-Houston in fall, 2017.


A&M-Kingsville student teams also placed in the Texas ACSM Student Bowl. The Texas ACSM Student Bowl is an event where teams of undergraduates from universities from all over the state compete in an academic quiz bowl devoted to exercise science and sports medicine topics.

The A&M-Kingsville Gold team placed ninth out of 30 teams from the state. Gold team members include Cruz Armas, a senior studying Exercise Science/Pre-PT, Tabitha Castillo, a senior studying Exercise Science/Pre-PT, Stephanie Holloway, a senior studying Exercise Science, and Mario Perez, a junior studying Exercise Science/Pre-PT.

The A&M-Kingsville Blue team came in 12th place. Blue team members include Meagan Cantu, Michael Martinez, a senior studying Exercise Science, Christina Whitney, a senior studying Exercise Science/Performance Psychology, and Zach Smith a senior studying Exercise Science/Pre-PT.
