Foundation Leadership

Chairman - Joe Henkel

Joe HenkelJoe Henkel became Chairman of the Foundation in November 2010. He became President and Chief Executive Officer of Kleberg First National Bank in Kingsville, Texas in 1998. He began his banking career at Kleberg Bank in 1970 while a student at Texas A&I. After graduation in 1971, he continued with Kleberg Bank, becoming a Vice President before moving to the Houston area in 1978 where he served as president & CEO for banks in the Allied and First City bank holding companies. In 1993, he became CEO of an independent bank in El Paso, Texas and served in that capacity until 1998. He is a graduate of the Southern Methodist University Graduate School of Banking in Dallas, Texas is involved in several civic activities and serves on several boards to include the Kingsville Area Industrial Development Foundation, Kingsville Area Economic Development Council and the Kingsville Council of the Navy League. He is Vice Chairman of the Dean’s National Council for the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Pharmacy and serves as a director for the Texas A&M Health Science Center Foundation, Coastal Bend Community Foundation, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation and H.M. King High School Foundation. He serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Business at A&M Kingsville and is on the Community Advisory Council for the Celanese Bishop Facility. Henkel was named a Distinguished Alumnus at Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2004 and has earned the Rotary Vocational Service Award. He and his wife “George” have three children.

1st Vice Chairman - Stephen "Tio" Kleberg

Stephen Mr. Kleberg was first elected to the board in 1988, Kleberg is a member of the historic King Ranch family and a longtime supporter of the university. He is a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas Tech University, was South Texan of the year for 1997, and has been honored by the American Quarter Horse Association and many other agencies and organizations.

2nd Vice Chair - Jean Claire Turcotte

Jean Claire Turcotte received her bachelors and masters degrees from then Texas A&I University in 1958 and 1985 respectively.  She enjoyed a successful career as a teacher (1976-1981) and principal (1981-2003) at St. Gertrude School in Kingsville. 

She was celebrated as the National Catholic Educators Association - Southwest Region Distinguished Principal of the Year in 1992 and the Communities in Schools Honoree in 2010.  In recognition of her career achievement and service, Turcotte was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 2008.  She also was the featured speaker at the university’s graduation that same year.

She is very active in her church (St. Gertrude's Catholic Church), the university and community serving on numerous boards and leadership committees.

Treasurer - Leonard A. Bedell

Leonard BedellAn active CPA, Leonard Bedell is President, CEO and a board member of Mobil Steel International, a 40 year-old industrial steel fabrication business serving the petrochemical, refining, power and energy induspies. Bedell also has served on the Board of Directors of Live Oak Consulting, American Medical Technologies, Tidel Technologies, MedCon and 3CI Complete Compliance Corporation where he served on the Audit and Compensation Committees.

Secretary - Hugh M. Morrison

Mr. Morrison was appointed to the Board of Cyberonics in November 2006.  He has also served as Managing Director at Callahan Advisors, LLC and as Chairman of the board of directors of Advanced Neuromodulation Systems, Inc.  He also was director of Own Healthcare (later Cardinal Healthcare) and Dow Hickam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (later sold to Mylan Laboratories, Inc.).  He was the President and CEO and Chairman of the board of directors of Pilgrim Cleaners and its parent, Clean Acquisition, Inc. He is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant.
