It is nearly impossible to imagine—a childhood spent lacking so many of the basic necessities others take for granted, including shoes, the lack of which leaves them vulnerable to soil-transmitted diseases, injury and infection. But for many children in developing countries around the world, this is their reality.

To draw attention to the plight of these children and their dire need, Texas A&M University-Kingsville students will participate in the world-wide “One Day Without Shoes”—Tuesday, April 5. The event sponsored by the student organization TOMS@TAMUK . This is the second year the organization sponsors the event at A&M-Kingsville.

The group is part of an international campaign to call awareness to people around the world who do not have shoes. The day is sponsored by TOMS shoes, a company that donates a pair of shoes to needy children for every pair purchased.

“It’s events like One Day Without Shoes that not only have a national impact, but also have an international impact. I’m proud to promote the One for One movement that has been putting shoes on millions of children’s feet since 2006,” said Genesis Urbina, a senior double majoring in Spanish and Journalism. The TOMS Shoes campus representative said those participating should wear shoes if they are required in places like food services and in lab settings.

In addition to spending the day without shoes, the campus community is encouraged to join in the TOMS@TAMUK Walk beginning at 5:30 p.m. April 5 on University Boulevard. Barefoot walking will begin at 5:30 p.m. and go on until 10 p.m.—walking a total of 10 laps around the boulevard.
