Student Satisfaction High at Texas A&M-Kingsville

During the fall 2010 semester, the students of Texas A&M University-Kingsville were asked to complete a Student Satisfaction Inventory Survey from Noel-Levitz, a national higher education consulting group. University administrators requested the survey, to determine where Texas A&M-Kingsville is best meeting student needs and where there are areas for improvement.  

Twenty-one percent of the students notified participated in the survey--1,352 total. They were asked 98 questions over twelve different categories. The results?  

First up, the survey reported high rates of satisfaction in:

  • campus life
  • academic advising
  • campus support services
  • student centeredness
  • campus climate
  • instructional effectiveness
  • concern for the individual
  • service excellence
  • responsiveness to diverse populations 

Beyond these specifics, broad institutional questions were asked of A&M-Kingsville students, with these affirmative responses: 

  • When asked, “So far, how has your college experience met your expectations?” more than half (52%) of students responded with the top three positive choices--“Better than I expected,” “Quite a bit better than I expected” or “Much better than expected.” 
  • When asked, “Rate your overall satisfaction with your experience here thus far,” the majority (62%) of student responses were the top two positive choices--“Satisfied” or “Very Satisfied.”
  • When asked, “All in all, if you had to do it over, would you enroll here again?” the most popular choice (35%) among respondents was the most positive one—“Definitely yes.” 

In addition, Noel-Levitz took the responses from A&M-Kingsville students and compared them to responses from students surveyed at 94 Southern four-year public institutions.   Responses were more positive than the national average in 97 percent of the questions asked. 

"First of all, I'm very pleased by the findings of the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Survey," said Dr. Steven Tallant, president of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. "Student survey respondents are telling us that they are pleased with life on campus, their instructors and advisors, and the service we're providing. These are major areas of importance, and I applaud our faculty and staff for the terrific job they've been doing. 

"The survey also shows an overall satisfaction with Texas A&M-Kingsville from the majority of our student responders. That serves as a source of encouragement for myself and the other administrators that the university is headed in the right direction," said Tallant. 

The Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory survey was overseen by the university's Office of Institutional Research. Its interim director of planning and assessment Vivian Golightly said of the results, "The university has worked very hard the over the last couple of years to respond to student concerns and we have been successful as the Noel-Levitz survey attests, but that doesn’t mean that we will stop listening or stop addressing other identified needs." 

Tallant reiterated that point. "The news has been great at Texas A&M-Kingsville, with enrollment at a 30-plus year high, and external awards for research and sponsored programs at a record-level $23 million. All that being said, there are areas of the university that we will continue to strengthen and hone, and we will continue turning to our students for their feedback. 

"We can never take our students' opinions for granted. Their viewpoint is critical."
