The Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences at Texas A&M University-Kingsville recently held its annual awards program.

Two special awards given by the college include the Friend of the College Award and the Hall of Honor Alumnus Award. Jerry F. Underbrink, DVM, owner and operator of the Animal Medical Clinic in Kingsville, received the Friend of the College Award. Juan M. Garcia, state executive director for the State Farm Service Agency, is the Hall of Honor Alumnus.

Underbrink serves as the attending veterinarian for the university’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and devotes extensive time investigating research and animal health questions in an effort to provide university animals the best care possible within the law.

Garcia was selected by the Obama administration to serve in his present capacity. He oversees all aspects of the federal farm delivery program for an agency that employs nearly 1,700 people and, on average, issues more than $1 billion annually in commodity, conservation and disaster and credit benefits to farmers and ranchers across the state.  He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in animal science from Texas A&I University in 1976.
