Language and literature teachers face challenges unique to their field, in their efforts to prepare students for higher education.

The department of language and literature at Texas A&M University-Kingsville is giving those teachers a chance to share those challenges with each other, through a Literacy Summit for English, French and Spanish teachers at the high school, community college and college/university level.

The Literacy Summit is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Blue Room, room 100, of Sam Fore Jr. Hall, on the A&M-Kingsville campus.

Dr. Susan Roberson, professor and chair of the department of language and literature, said the summit is a formal follow-up to smaller gatherings the university has had previously with area language arts and language teachers.

“By bringing together English, Spanish and French teachers from area high schools and community colleges to Texas A&M-Kingsville to discuss literacy and best practices for teaching our students, we will be able not only to engage in important discussions about bridging the gaps from high school to college, from community college to university but also to establish a network of colleagues,” said Roberson.

She noted that A&M-Kingsville language and literature faculty will be joined at the event by educators from Del Mar College, Coastal Bend College and from a number of area high schools.

“Participants will bring ideas for teaching in their fields to share with other summit participants and all will discuss the kinds of challenges that we as language and literature teachers face. This kind of conversation will engage us as a team working toward a common goal—the success of students,” said Roberson.

Breakfast pastries and lunch will be provided at the event. Door prizes, including Barnes & Noble gift cards, Javelina football tickets and more, also will be awarded. A professional development certificate will be given to summit participants.
