Guest Artists Featured in KSO Salute to Mozart

The next Kingsville Symphony Orchestra concert will feature two guest artists as part of its third program of the season, The Magic of Mozart. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, in Jones Auditorium 855 N. Armstrong, at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Luke Hsu, a 17 year old violinist from Katy will perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. The high school senior was the Bowed Instrument Grand Prize Winner of the 2008 Kingsville International Young Performers Competitions. He has performed with the Houston Young Artists gala concerts and the Clear Lake Symphony Orchestra.

Hsu served for several years as concert master of the Texas All-State Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Greater Houston Youth Orchestra. Later this year he will play with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Larry D. Purkey will be the narrator for Aaron Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait, a salute by the KSO and the Texas A&M-Kingsville History Club to the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Purkey is the associate pastor of worship and music at the First Baptist Church in Kingsville.

He is a member of the Singing Men of South Texas and has toured the country with the recording group The CenturyMen and as part of the church duet Purkey and Cox. The Copland piece includes excerpts from the great documents that Lincoln wrote.

The Women’s Club of Kingsville and the Falfurrias High School Band under the direction of Paul Saenz will be honored during the concert.

The program also includes Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, Strauss’s On the Beautiful Blue Danube, and the overture to Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. KSO Music Director Stefan Sanders will conduct the concert.
