Enlisted military, veterans in uniform admitted free

By Dr. D. Wayne Gunn
Kingsville Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors

The Kingsville Symphony Orchestra will present a Patriotic Concert to celebrate July 4 and to honor our military. The concert will be at 3 p.m. in Jones Auditorium, located at 855 N. Armstrong on the Texas A&M University-Kingsville campus.

The concert consists of many short pieces appropriate to the occasion. It will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” and a virtual fireworks display. Conductor for the occasion will be Brian Shelton, director of bands at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
All enlisted military and veterans who wear an appropriate uniform will be admitted free to the concert.

Tickets can be purchased at the door. Prices are $30, $20, $10, and $5. Students and children tickets are $5.
The program will continue our 2007-2008 theme of “The Seasons” with Antonio Vivaldi's “Summer” concerto, featuring concert master Jose Flores. The rest of the program is as follows:
“Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland; “American Salute” by Morton Gould; “Victory at Sea” by Richard Rodgers; “Hoedown” from “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland; “National Emblem” by E. E. Bagley; “Summon the Heroes” by John Williams; “Washington Post” by John Philip Sousa; “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore; “America the Beautiful” arranged by Carmen Dragon; “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa; “Royal Fireworks Music” by George-Frederic Handel; “Olympic Fanfare” by John Williams; “Armed Forces Salute” arranged by Joyce Eilers; and the “1812 Overture” by Peter I. Tchaikovsky.

During the “Armed Forces Salute,” each branch of the military will be asked to stand when their appropriate anthem is played.

As a special treat, the handcrafted thank you notes, written by Gillette Intermediate School students for the recent Kingsville Symphony Orchestra Children’s Concert, will be displayed in the foyer of Jones Auditorium.
The Kingsville Symphony Orchestra would like to welcome as many military personnel from the Coastal Bend as Jones Auditorium can hold. For additional concert information, please contact Dr. Nancy KingSanders, board president, at 361-593-2157, or go online at www.kingsvillesymphony.org.
