Variety Of Camps Help Keep Children Of Ages Busy For Summer

School will be out for summer vacation shortly and soon after that, children of all ages will be telling their parents, “I’m bored.” To put and end to the summer doldrums why not enroll your child in one of the many academic and athletic camps at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Held at the John E. Conner Museum, Camp Conner is a day camp for children ages seven though 12 with different age groups visiting on different days, Tuesday through Friday. Camp Conner will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 10, through Friday, June 27, and again Tuesday, July 8, through Friday, July 25.
The age group schedule is as follows: Tuesdays, six- and seven-year olds; Wednesdays, eight- and nine-year olds; Thursdays, 10-, 11- and 12-year olds; and Fridays, six- and seven-year olds. Camp is $10 per day and the registration deadline is the day prior to camp.
Scheduled topics include: week of June 10, Cultures of Texas; week of June 17, Art Week I; week of June 24, Liberty Week; week of July 8, Art Week II; week of July 15, Science and a Bit of Magic; and the week of July 22, Flight.

Music Camp for Voice, Strings and Piano
The Music Camp for Voice, Strings and Piano is a residential camp for high school students that will be held from Sunday, June 15, through Friday, June 20.

Summer Band Camp
Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Summer Band Camp will be held from Sunday, June 22, through Friday, June 27. It is open to middle and high school students ages 13-18. The cost is $295 for residential campers, $210 for those commuting daily and $150 for all-state band members. The private lesson fee is $15 per lesson and a $50 deposit is required with the registration form.
The deadline to register is Friday, June 6. Residence hall check in will take place at the Turner-Bishop Hall lobby June 22.

The Javelina cheer squad will host a cheer camp Thursday, July 10, through Saturday, July 12, at the Steinke Physical Education Center (SPEC). The camp is for cheerleaders ages 12 through 18. The deadline to register is Friday, June 13. The cost of camp is $175 for residential participants, $120 or commuter participants and $150 for cheer coaches or sponsors. There also is a $40 registration fee.

The King Ranch Family Trust and the Center for Distance Learning and Continuing Education will sponsor Kritter Kamp for children seven through 10 from 8 a.m. through noon Monday, July 7, through Friday, July 11. Participants will be lead through an entertaining environmental educational experience inspired by science and art. Campers will learn about the life cycle of the butterfly, tour three exhibits on campus, including the serpentarium and take photos of Coastal Bend wildlife in their natural habitats.
The cost is $100 for camper. Military dependents and children of A&M-Kingsville employees pay only $85. The camp is limited to 20 students and 10 scholarships are available. Pre-registration ends Tuesday, July 1. Campers report to room 118 in Cousins Hall.

Discovering Belly Dancing
Youth 12 years and older might like to learn the art of belly dancing this summer. Two sessions of Discovering Belly Dancing will be held Monday through Thursday, July 7-10, and again July 14-17. Classes will be held from 1:30 to 4:10 p.m., in room 219A of the Memorial Student Union Building. The cost is $40 per session.

Softball camp and clinics
Javelina softball coach Blake Miller will host a three-day camp in June and a series of one-day clinics in July. The came will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, June 3-5, at the Javelina Softball Field. The cost is $50 and the deadline to pre-register is Friday, May 30. Camp is limited to the first 50 campers registered.
The clinics are limited to 15 athletes and designed for personalized training. They are $30 per clinic. Youth ages 8 to 12 are invited Wednesday, July 2, and Tuesday, July 15. Athletes ages 13-18 are invited Wednesday, July 9, Tuesday, July 22, and Tuesday, July 29.

Javelina football coach Bo Atterberry will host two different football camps this summer. Javelina Youth Football camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday, June 5-6, for athletes in first through sixth grade. Registration begins at 8 a.m. June 5 in McCulley Hall. The cost of the camp is $60.
Athletes in seventh through 12th grades are invited to attend the Javelina Skill Football Camp from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 7. Participants should report to McCulley Hall. The cost is $60.

Student Athletic Trainer Workshop
The Student Athletic Trainer Workshop is a residential camp geared for the high school age student athletic trainer. It will be held Wednesday, July 9, through Saturday, July 12. Workshop tuition is $250. For groups of three or more, tuition is $225. A $50 deposit is required with the registration fee. The deadline to register for camp is Tuesday, July 1. Participants should report to McCulley Hall at 1 p.m. the first day of camp.

Boy’s Basketball Camp
Javelina Men’s Basketball Coach Pete Peterson will host a boy’s basketball camp for players seven to 17 years old from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 14, through Friday, July 18, at the Steinke Physical Education Center. Campers may commute or stay in the residence halls. The deadline to register is Friday, June 27.
The cost of camp is $160 for day campers and $345 for overnight campers. If space is available, late registrations will be taken from 7 to 7:45 a.m., but a $20 late registration fee will be assessed.

Girl’s Basketball Camp
Women’s coach Scott Hyland will host three different camps in the Steinke Physical Education Center.
A Mother/Daughter Shooting Camp will be held Friday and Saturday, July 18-19, for athletes in grades four through 12. The cost for mother and daughter is $175 for overnighters and $125 for commuters. The fee for a camper only will be $100 for overnighters and $75 for commuters. The camp will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. July 18 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 19.
A Day Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 21, through Wednesday, July 23, for athletes from kindergarten to eighth grade. The cost is $90 per camper.
A Post/Perimeter Position Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 24-25. The cost is $75 for campers from seventh to twelfth grade.

Two volleyball camps are still open for registration. They will be hosted by Javelina Volleyball Coach Shannon Alvarado in the Steinke Physical Education Center. A third team camp is already full. The pre-registration deadline for all volleyball camps is Friday, May 30.
An Advanced Skills Camp for high school students only will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 26-27. The cost is $175 for commuters and $250 for overnight campers.
Skills camp, for athletes entering fifth through 12th grades will be held Monday, July 28, through Thursday, July 31. The cost for a day camper is $200 with overnight campers paying $350.
