Kingsville native Seferino “Nino” Mendietta has worked his way up through the ranks at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and has recently been named director of the Memorial Student Union Building (MSUB) and Student Activities. This position gives him oversight for everything in student activities, the union building and recreational sports.
Mendietta said since beginning his employment at the MSUB 17 years ago, he has gained experience in all positions and in national student activities organizations. “I have gained a lot of experience by becoming involved in student activities organizations at the state, regional and national level.”
This experience has allowed him to see what other universities are doing in their student unions and in student activities and bring those ideas to A&M-Kingsville.
“One of the first things I want to do is establish strong community service and leadership components for our students,” Mendietta said. “I believe that a community service program instills the importance of giving back to our community in our students. Leadership gives students many skills that they will use in their lives beyond their tenure at A&M-Kingsville. I think we need to teach our students to be ‘servant leaders.’”
The next step, Mendietta said, is to work to make the student union more student-friendly. He said there are some plans in the works that will already begin that process.
Frank Ureño, associate vice president and dean of students, said Mendietta was selected for the position after a competitive national search. “I think he can continue the momentum of improvement started by our last director.
“We have seen what he has already done working within the union on a daily basis and you add that to his involvement at the national level,” Ureño said. “He knows what potential is there for the union and I want him to take it to the next level. He has earned the opportunity to lead the MSUB and its activities.”
Mendietta has been associate director of operations at the MSUB since November 2002. Prior to that he was director of student activities for more than seven years and coordinator of student development for three. He started his career at A&M-Kingsville as night manager of the union building.
He is a graduate of the university receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in counseling and guidance.
Mendietta received the Markley Award for the Central Region of the National Association for Campus Activities in 2004 and the Service Award for the same organization for 2003-04. He was named A&M-Kingsville Employee of the Year in 2002 and Student Affairs Employee of the Year in 2001.
Mendietta is active in a number of national organizations including the National Association for Campus Activities. He is currently regional coordinator-elect and business manager for the central region. He has previously served as regional conference coordinator and facilities coordinator for the central region, was on the national convention production crew and was associate member relations coordinator.
He also is a member of the Association of College Unions International, the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators, the National Association of College Auxiliary Services and the National Association of Campus Card Users.
