Texas A&M-Kingsville students bring awards home from TIPA contest

Students from Texas A&M University-Kingsville recently attended the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) and Convention in San Antonio and brought home several awards.

Fares Sabawi, former editor and current managing editor of The South Texan student newspaper, led the way with five awards. Sabawi, from Portland, placed first in information graphic; second in editorial writing; third in news photo; honorable mention for live editorial writing; and honorable mention for photo illustration.

He and Thalia Perez from Alamo received an honorable mention in live two-person photo essay.

Frank Garza, South Texan editor from Mercedes, received three awards, including honorable mentions in feature story; feature photo; and staff editorial. Dante Hernandez, from Harlingen, won two awards – second place in live English radio announcing; and honorable mention in live video news.

Other award winners were Herminio Rodriguez, from Corpus Christi, second place in live Spanish radio announcing; Rey Castillo, from Corpus Christi, honorable mention in live sports writing; Kim Caughman, from Bishop, first place in editorial cartoon; D.A. Zapata, from Palmview, honorable mention in critical review; and James Espinosa, from Kingsville, second place in sports writing.

In addition, Dr. Manuel Flores, professor, and students Fernando Flores and Dante Hernandez presented a session on How to Prepare and Air a 30-minute Sports Show on Local Network TV.
