Minutes from the
Graduate Council Meeting of January 25, 2005
Faculty Present:
Drs. Ballard, Bradley, Faruqi, Garza, Hewitt, Martinez, Massa, Melendy,
Nekovei, Olivares, Pilehvari, Ponder, Shorter, Stanko and Wagman.

Representatives Present: Rebeka Gutierrez, Sameer Gokhale, and Jayce Mathews
I.
The meeting was held in the Blue Room of Sam Fore Hall. Dr. Melendy called the meeting to order at
2:45 P.M.
II.
Standing Committee Reports
A.
A. Executive Committee-Dr.
Melendy stated there was nothing to report at this time.
B.
B. Curriculum
Committee-Dr. Bradley stated there was nothing to report at this time.
C.
C. Membership Committee-Dr.
Melendy stated applications for graduate faculty status were due this week.
D.
D. Program Review Committee- Dr.
Massa stated the program review documents have been distributed and are under
review.
III.
Dean’s Report
Dr. Olivares delivered the Dean’s report.
A new draft of the Vision, Core Values and Institutional Goals was
provided.
The Graduate Council met with Drs. Dantzker and Juarez to discuss and
provide feedback regarding the TAMUK Vision, Core Values and Institutional
Goals.
Dr. Olivares presented a handout detailing a set of proposed degrees
that are currently offered or are being developed for as online degrees.
Dr. Olivares distributed a handout detailing the online graduate degrees
recently approved by the Board of Regents.
Dr. Olivares distributed a handout for the Texas Higher Education
Coordinating Board recommendations for Doctoral Education in Texas.
Dr. Olivares announced that all graduate degree planning proposals
should be routed through the Graduate Curriculum Committee for their consideration.
The Graduate Council was reminded that graduate level courses should
only be taught by faculty with the terminal degree in that discipline.

Student Representatives
Nothing was discussed at this time.
V.
Old Business
Nothing was discussed at this time.
VI.
New Business
Two planning proposals were presented by Drs. Estrada and Pilehvari for
new doctorates in Chemical Engineering and Infrastructure Engineering. The Graduate Council supports their efforts
in pursuing these new programs.
VII.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 4:23 P.M. The motion was seconded and passed. The next meeting of the Graduate Council is
scheduled for February 15, 2005.
