Auditions for the musical Once Upon a Mattress will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, May 16-17, at Jones Auditorium at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Rehearsals will begin Tuesday, May 31, with performances Friday through Sunday, July 15-17.

The production is a joint effort between the music and communications/theatre arts department at Texas A&M-Kingsville. However, the public is invited to try out. Dr. Kenneth D. Williams, associate professor of music, will be the artistic and music director and Corey Ranson, assistant professor of communications and theatre arts, will be the stage director and production designer. Costumes will be designed and created by Cristina Suarez-Machuca.

Once Upon a Mattress was written by Mary Rodger and Marshall Barer and is carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic. This musical is a rollicking spin on the familiar classic The Princes and the Pea and involves royal courtship and comeuppance, and provides for some side-splitting shenanigans.

Texas A&M-Kingsville students who participate must be enrolled in one of three summer I classes, MUSI 1159 Music Theatre or THEA 1120 Theatre Practice or THEA 2330 Rehearsal and Performance. Each are worth one credit.

The musical first premiered in 1959 with Carol Burnett as Princess Winnifred which she later reprised in the role in television adaptations in 1964 and 1972. In a 2005 version, Burnett played the evil Queen Aggravain. The musical was revived on Broadway in 1996 with Sarah Jessica Parker and Jane Krakowski as the leading ladies.
