The event, sponsored by the Honors College, will include showings of Schindler’s List on April 28, and Sometimes in April, a film about the Rwanda genocide, on April 29. Both showings take place from 6-9 p.m. in room 219C of the Memorial Student Union Building (MSUB), on the A&M-Kingsville campus. In addition to the film screenings, there will be information about the Holocaust and other genocides, including information about modern classifications of genocide.

This event is free and open to the public.

These days of remembrance are being held in recognition of the 65th anniversary of the verdicts at the first Nuremberg trial as well as the 50th anniversary of the trial of Adolf Eichmann, one of the most high-profile postwar trials connected to the Nazi genocide.

The Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. has designated “Justice and Accountability in the Face of Genocide: What Have We Learned?” as the theme for this year’s observance.

“The Nuremberg trials helped shape the way international justice would be pursued,” said United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Director Sara J. Bloomfield, “while the Eichmann trial exposed a global audience to the enormity of the Holocaust and especially its victims. The anniversaries of these historic events come as some of the last living Nazis are being tried for their crimes and remind us of the importance of the ongoing quest for accountability in the wake of genocide.”

Each year, community, military, religious, educational and civic institutions nationwide hold Holocaust remembrance observances with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum leading the national ceremony in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. This year, Texas A&M-Kingsville Honors College students decided to sponsor such an experience here in Kingsville.
