About 400 Javelinas will hit the streets of Kingsville Saturday, March 22, to help out at various locations around the city. Students from Texas A&M University-Kingsville will participate in The Bigger Event by doing community service.

“The Bigger Event is one of the ways students at Texas A&M-Kingsville gives back to the city,” said Chelsea Nkrumah, president of the Student Government Association (SGA). “In partnering with the City of Kingsville and Kleberg County, the students of A&M-Kingsville will make an impact in the community by helping clean up parks, paint buildings, pick up trash and so much more.

“Accomplishing this feat is no easy task and generous donations from the community are needed to make this day possible,” she added. “The SGA earnestly needs support in making this event possible. We ask for help in any way possible, whether it be volunteering or requesting our students to help out at your location.”

Nkrumah said plans thus far are for the students to work at locations like the Kingsville Fire Station and the Kleberg County Courthouse, the city landfill and public works.

Students will meet in the tailgate area at Javelina Stadium at 8 a.m., have breakfast and head out to their assigned locations. They end the day at about 3 p.m. back at the stadium for lunch. There will be t-shirts for participants and door prizes.

For the first time, local high school students also will be involved in The Bigger Event.

Several sponsors have already been lined up for the event, but Nkrumah said more are needed.  Current sponsors include campus departments like Student Health and Wellness, Student Activities, Student Affairs, Javelina Alumni Association, Aramark, Campus Activities Board and Residence Hall Association.
