Program Requirements

Nuclear Engineering Minor requirement:

  • MEEN 3398 Computer Applications in Nuclear Engineering*
  • MEEN 4395 Thermal Hydraulics of Nuclear Reactors
  • MEEN 4396 Nuclear Safety and Reliability
  • MEEN 4397 Nuclear Energy
  • EVEN 3398 Nuclear Environmental Protection
*Note: MEEN 3398 uses SCALE6 code package as the main simulation tool. It must be requested from https://rsicc.ornl.gov/ by each individual student. The code will be used around the fourth week of the class. It may take two weeks or more to receive the code in mail, if you are a US citizen. Processing time is much longer for non-citizen students. Processing time varies for different countries of citizen. Request may be denied for certain countries of citizen. The approval process is handled by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Department of Energy. It is not controlled by the instructor or TAMUK. Students are advised to apply for the code two months before the first day of the class, especially for the international students. Failure to obtain the code before the midterm will result in drop from the class, I or F grade. A fee of $250-$750 may be required for non-citizens based on the current policy. Students of US citizen should receive the disks at no cost. Please check RSICC website for current policies.

To receive a minor in nuclear engineering, a student must complete three of the above courses as engineering electives in the current curriculum with a grade of “C” or better in each. Plus any three of the following courses with a grade of “C” or better in each

  • MEEN/CHEN 3347 Thermodynamics
  • MEEN 3348/CHEN 3310 Heat Transfer
  • MEEN/CHEN 3392 Fluid Mechanics
  • MEEN 4344 Control of Systems
  • CEEN 3311 Strength of Materials
  • EEEN 3331 Circuits and Electromagnetic Devices
