Personnel Profile

Jonathan Plant, Museum Director

Jonathan Plant

I have been Museum Director at the John E. Conner Museum at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, since April 2013; I served as Curator since 2007; and as Curator/Interim Director since September 2012. I am responsible for preserving and interpreting the Museum’s collections of approximately cultural and natural history artifacts, and overseeing the Museum’s permanent collections, temporary exhibits, and public programs.

I am a ‘native Texan’—from the north side of the Red River-- I completed my undergraduate work at Oklahoma State University and received a M.A. in History, Museum Studies, from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1997. My professional experience before coming to Texas included work with the Oklahoma Historical Society and their State Museum of History, the Oklahoma Territorial Museum and the UCO Laboratory of History Museum. In 2001, I joined the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a Park Interpreter at the Sea Rim State Park/Sabine Pass Battleground State Park and Historic Site Complex with the responsibility for all interpretive programs, including programs for school groups, special events, and park visitor programs. In 2006, I transferred to Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site in West Columbia where I served as Museum Curator with the responsibility for the site’s approximately 4,000-piece American decorative arts collection, exhibit development, and site interpretation.

As an enthusiast of Texas History, particularly the period of the Texas Republic through the American Civil War, I enjoy working with the actual material objects associated with those times and sharing my enthusiasm with others. One of my personal goals is to compile the largest Alamo reference library, second only to the DRT Library in San Antonio.
