Corey Ranson, Associate Professor, Director of Theatre Activities

Corey Ranson

Corey has worked over 15 years in live theatre, professionally and non-professionally, as a director, actor, producer, artistic director and designer from the Dallas Fort Worth and surrounding areas down to Corpus Christi, Texas. He  has worked with such theatres and companies as Circle Theatre, Jubilee Theatre, Scott Theatre, Dallas Music Hall, JFK Theatre, Uptown Players, Regal Opera Company, Expressions Repertory Theatre, Flower Mound  Performing Arts Theatre, Casa Manana, Creative Arts Theatre and School (CATS), Redbud Theatre, Granbury Opera House, Dallas Cultural Bathhouse Theatre, Main Street Theatre (Mansfield), Fort Worth Dallas Ballet (now the Texas Ballet Theatre) and the Margo Jones Music Hall. He has directed, produced and designed over 80 productions. Corey has been Artistic Director for the Flower Mound Performing Arts Theatre (SPT-1, equity), 2000-2003, Artistic Director for the Harbor Playhouse in Corpus Christi, TX, 2004 – 2008, and Co-founder and Artistic Director for the Aurora Arts Theatre in Corpus Christi, TX 2009, as well as Production Manager with the Granbury Opera House (SPT - 6 Equity).

As a theatre educator, he has taught theatre for Tarrant County College, Cedar Valley College, Wharton County Junior College, University of North Texas and Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi. Corey has been with Texas A & M University – Kingsville since 2008, as Visiting Assistant Professor, to Assistant Professor Director of Theatre Activities to Associate Professor, Director of Theatre Activities today. Since coming to TAMUK, Corey has been heavily involved with the Kenneday Center American College Theatre Festival and through TAMUK production has garnered over 60 awards over a 5 year period for students and staff. Corey has been recognized by KCACTF for Excellence in Directing, Excellence in Production Design, Excellence in Playwriting and for Supporting Educational Theatre. He is the Texas Chair for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region 6 and past Vice-Chair for Texas. He spends much of his semester traveling around to various Texas Universities and responding to productions for KCACTF and assisting others in that process. As a playwright, Corey has written several plays, two of which have been toured and presented at the KCACTF State level, and one which received Runner-up for the David Mark Cohen National Playwriting Award. He has also received recognition from KCACTF and several awards for his work in Directing and Design. He holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts Performance from Texas Wesleyan University and an M.A. in Drama for Directing from Texas Woman's University. Corey also holds an MFA in Theatre Arts in Dramatic Writing from the University of Idaho. He has written several plays and presented them at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. He fosters new plays here at TAMUK. His goal as a professor of theatre is to focus on giving all students the chance for every opportunity that he's grateful to have had.
