Hi, I am Barbara Collins, and I serve as the Director of the Disability Resource Center at Texas A&M University-Kingsville where I make positive impacts in the lives of students with disabilities and have over 35 years of experience in Higher Education. I am also a doctoral candidate in the Educational Leadership program at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. I hold a Master of Science in Counseling and Guidance and a Bachelor in Business Administration from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
I am originally from Galveston, Texas, where I grew up and earned a track and field scholarship to Texas A&M University-Kingsville. I take great pride in being a Javelina and have dedicated my career to ensuring that all students have opportunities for growth and development. I have demonstrated a strong commitment to inclusion, accessibility, and student success.
As the Director of the Disability Resource Center, I ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to education and campus life through effective accommodations, programs, and advocacy. I have established the Autism Ad Hoc Committee and the Disability Advisory Committee, hosted campus training on autism and disability awareness, and implemented federal initiatives such as the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) to support students’ career development. As a graduate of the President’s Leadership Academy which enhanced my leadership skills, I have also advised student organizations and served on key university committees, which contribute to a more inclusive and engaged campus community. Additionally, I am a member of Texas Ahead Association where I held the Director at Large position on the Board of Directors for two years. I am also a member of the national Association on Higher Education And Disability (AHEAD).
My experience within the university spans multiple departments and leadership roles, reflecting a deep understanding of student services, operations, and administration. I have held several leadership and administrative roles across the university, including Associate Director of Student Health and Wellness, Interim Associate Director of Life Services and Wellness, and positions in student services, housing, and fiscal affairs. These diverse experiences have strengthened my expertise in student support, program development, fiscal management, and institutional collaboration.
Family is everything to me, and I cherish spending time with my husband of 36 years and our sons. I enjoy dancing, exercising, shopping, and attending formal events. Most importantly, I find strength in my faith; I live by Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
