Student Recreation Center (STRC)

Texas A&M University- Kingsville Department of Recreational Sports has developed guidelines in an effort to create a safe, fun and welcoming environment for all participants. Campus Recreation policies are designed for the protection of members, employees, and facilities.


  • All currently enrolled TAMUK students must present their Javelina Express Card (Student ID) to enter the Student Recreation Center. Non-student members shall present either a Javelina Card (Staff or Faculty ID), or a valid Membership Card and a photo ID.  All patrons shall have their ID on their person at all times while using the facility and present to Recreational Sports staff when asked.
  • Texas A&M- Kingsville Faculty and Staff, non-member students, Alumni, as well as community members may use the Rec Center on a drop-in basis by purchasing a daily pass.  Drop-in user shall present a Javelina Card, or State identification card. For the spousal rate, primary membership is required and must be purchased first. If the affiliated patron is not going to purchase a primary membership, then the spouse may purchase a community membership (not the spousal rate). In either case, the patrons must present a marriage license/certificate, joint tax return(s), proof of joint bank account or a lease with the same residence.
  • To promote healthful interaction, full fee-paying students, members with a current membership, and qualified drop-in users may invite up to three guests per day. Guests must purchase a guest pass and be accompanied by their sponsors when they enter the facility.  Guests must present a photo ID and sign waiver upon purchase of a daily pass. Sponsors are responsible for guests’ behaviors as well as loss/damage to the Student Recreation Center equipment and/or facilities.
  • Javelina Cards, memberships and passes to the Student Recreation Center are non-transferable. Attempts to use another member's ID or provide a member ID for another use violates University and State regulations. Rec. Sports obtain the right to confiscate ID if the person using the ID is impersonating another. UPD will be called and a police report will be filed and the ID will be confiscated.
  • Tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and any other illegal substance and weapons/firearms are prohibited at all Recreational Sports Facilities and Programs
  • The Recreation Sports Staff reserves the right to deny entry to anyone displaying inappropriate behavior, including belligerence or intoxication.
  • Food and drinks are not permitted in the activity areas, unless explicitly approved for special events by staff. Beverages in non-glass, spill proof containers are permitted as long as they do not present a trip hazard.
  • Bicycles, mopeds, cleats, skateboarding, hoverboards, and roller-skates/blades are not allowed within Rec Center facilities. Skateboards and bikes are not permitted at the entry to the Recreation Center or on patio furniture, benches, bleachers, and landscape boulders.
  • Photography and videotaping are only permitted within the Student Rec Center if pre-approved by the Director of Recreational Sports.
  • Shirts are required in all areas of the building except the pool and locker rooms. Shorts must be long enough to cover the buttocks and groin when exercising or moving.
  • Clean, non-marking, close-toed, closed heel shoes are required in activity spaces. Bare feet are not permitted except in the pool and locker rooms. Open toe shoes and hiking boots are not permitted.
  • Patrons are responsible for the cost of any damages resulting from disorderly conduct or misuse of equipment.
  • Posters, signs, and flyers are not allowed in the building unless approved and posted in designated areas by Recreational Sports staff.
  • Use of Recreation Sports facilities for personal gain violates University policy relating to facilities, services, programs, and solicitation, and is not permitted.
  • All adjustments to the facility or equipment are to be performed by Recreational Sports staff only.
  • Children under 16 are not allowed in the Rec Center unless they are participating in age specified Department sponsored program or rental event, or unless accompanied at all times by a parent or legal guardians. Children under 16 may not use the Cardio/Weight Room or use any cardiovascular machines located throughout the Student Recreation Center at any time.
  • Baby strollers/carriers are not allowed in activity areas.
  • Facility schedules are subject to change for special events.
  • Recreational Sports is not responsible for any lost, stolen, misplaced or damaged items.
  • Members and guests should secure all items in a locker.  Day use lockers are available in all locker rooms and throughout the building at no charge, on a first come, first serve basis. Day use locker keys must be returned and all locker contents must be removed 15 minutes prior to the facility closing.

Rec. Sports is housed in a 30,000-square-foot Student Recreation Center (STRC). Completed in Spring 2010, the STRC provides many opportunities for Texas A&M University-Kingsville students to partake in indoor recreational, intramural sports, and fitness activities. The STRC includes two full-size multipurpose basketball courts; a 6,100 square foot cardio fitness and free weight room; and a 1/12 mile elevated indoor jogging track. Activities such as volleyball, badminton, and soccer are played in the gymnasium. The STRC also offers an adjacent outdoor basketball court.

Community members may purchase a day pass or Rec Sports membership at the Student Recreation Center.

*Pool closed during Volleyball, Football, and Men's and Women's Basketball games.

Pool hour are subject to change.

The Pool at the SPEC is 50 meters long and features seven lanes for lap swimming. The depth ranges from 4 feet deep to 11.5 feet deep.  The SPEC is the only indoor public swimming pool in Kingsville and is open year round.   Private swim lessons are available upon request.   Email the Aquatics Coordinator, Jessica.Sanders@tamuk.edu to coordinate the lesson schedule.

The Javelina Gaming Center is located on the first floor of the Jernigan Library. It has 10 gaming PCs, 4 43" TVs, 2 75" TVs, and a dedicated network.

The Rec. Sports Complex is a 17-acre-sport complex comprised of multiple grass fields, softball fields, NCAA tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, and a cricket pitch. The facility is staffed by students and fully lit for those evening hours.
