Dr. David Rolandson


Associate Professor of Music Education

David M. Rolandson is Associate Professor of Music Education at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He earned a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Music in Wind Band Conducting from Central Washington University, and a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Minnesota Duluth. His primary conducting teachers were Craig Kirchhoff and Larry Gookin.

Prior to his appointment Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Dr. Rolandson served as Chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Associate Professor of Music, and Director of Bands at Minot State University (MSU), where he conducted the Concert Band and led the MSU Marching Band. In addition, Dr. Rolandson taught low brass, conducting, and music education courses at MSU. He was also the faculty advisor for the MSU Student Chapter of the National Association for Music Education and principal tubist in the Minot Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Rolandson is in demand as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician. He has presented research and professional development sessions at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, NAfME National Music Research and Teacher Education Conference, the Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium, the NAfME Northwest Region Conference, and the NAfME Eastern Region Conference. In addition, he has been published in the Journal of Music Teacher Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, The North Dakota Music Educator, and Interval: The Journal of the Minnesota Music Educators Association. His research interests include alternative approaches to music education and music teacher professional development. Dr. Rolandson previously served as the North Dakota Music Educators Association Research Chair, Collegiate Chair, and NDMEA Journal Editor.

Prior to his tenure in higher education, Dr. Rolandson taught instrumental music for six years in the Washington and Minnesota public school systems. Most recently, he was the Director of Bands at Renton High School and Dimmitt Middle School in Renton, Washington (2008-2012). While in Renton, his ensembles frequently received high ratings at regional contests, and his high school students were routinely selected to perform at the annual Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest. Dr. Rolandson was also an active member of the Washington Music Educators Association serving as the Soundview Region President from 2010-2012. In 2009, he received the Renton Area Chamber of Commerce “Ahead of the Class” award for teaching excellence.
