Veterans Upward Bound


Program Description

Texas A&M University-Kingsville Veterans Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO grant program from the U.S. Department of Education. This selective program will provide critical support services to 125 eligible Veterans Upward Bound participants. TAMUK VUB is designed to assist in developing the academic skills they may need to be accepted to and succeed in obtaining a postsecondary education. The program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in core subject areas.  The primary goal of this program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs.

Additional Information:

Texas A&M University-Kingsville Veterans Upward Bound program will provide instruction in mathematics through pre-calculus, laboratory science, foreign language, composition and literature. Short-term remedial or refresher courses will be available for veterans who are high school graduates but have delayed pursuing postsecondary education. TAMUK VUB will also assist veterans in securing support services from other locally available resources such as the Veterans Administration, state veteran’s agencies, veteran associations, and other state and local agencies that serve veterans.

  • Information on improving the financial and economic literacy of participants

  • Mentoring programs
  • Computer Lab
  • Information on postsecondary education opportunities
  • Assistance in preparing and registering for college entrance exams (TSIA)
  • Guidance and assistance in obtaining high school diploma or GED certificate
  • Exposure to cultural events, academic programs, and other educational activities
  • Referrals to other critical support services on campus or within home communities

In order to be eligible for TAMUK Veterans Upward Bound, participants must meet the following criterion:

  • Proof of military service (DD214)
  • Other than a dishonorable discharge
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residents
  • Reside in Kleberg, Duval, Jim Wells, Brooks, Willacy, and Hidalgo Counties
  • Be either low-income (based on family income and number of dependents) and/or potential first-generation college students (neither parent earned a 4-year degree)
  • All participants must demonstrate academic potential as well as have academic need
