Upward Bound


About

This preparatory college program is federally funded by a grant through the U.S. Department of Education. The Upward Bound (UB) program will maintain 55 project participants each academic school year. The intent of this program is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post secondary education. Eligible students must show a need for academic support in order to pursue a program of education beyond high school. Students are offered the opportunity to enhance talents and skills related to their core curriculum, prepare for post-secondary education and prepare for college opportunities.

The objectives of this program are met through participation in a variety of services. These services are offered during the summer component and academic year follow-up sessions.

  • Exposure to cultural awareness

  • Preparation for postsecondary education
  • Test-taking skills
  • Seminars/workshops
  • College and financial aid information

  • Six Week Residential Program at Texas A&M University-Kingsville
  • Simulated College Environment
  • Intensive Instruction in Math, Science & Technical Writing
  • Mentor Program with University Faculty and Faculty Assistants
  • Tutoring and Counseling Services
  • Strengthen Academic and Social Skills

In order to be eligible for the Upward Bound Program you must meet the following requirements:

  • Students must have completed the 8th grade
  • Be between the ages of 13 and 19
  • Have a need for academic support
  • Meet current income and first generation guidelines (neither natural parent has a Bachelor degree)
  • A legal resident of the state of Texas
  • Be enrolled in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade (Enrolled at a target school)

  • Alice High School (Alice, Texas)
  • H.M. King High School (Kingsville, Texas)
  • San Diego High School (San Diego, Texas)
