Popular Coping Mechanisms to Manage Performance Anxiety in Undergraduate Trumpet Players in the State of Texas

Whether it be with an ensemble or a solo performance, Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) is a common type of anxiety that can afflict any musician. Included in this study is a review of the literature showing the potential effectiveness and potential consequences of consumables, such as alcohol and cannabis among others, in addition to other activities that influence the mental and cognitive well-being of an individual. For this study, a projected total of 200 undergraduate trumpet players (N=200) will be asked to participate in an online survey to assess popular methods of coping with performance anxiety. The forms of coping mechanisms within the survey range from alcohol and/or substance abuse to yoga and other means of physical activity. Some studies hint at alcohol potentially being the most popular form of coping. Data collection is currently ongoing. The results for this study could lead to a better understanding of the popular forms of coping for MPA.
