Psychiatric Services

For some students, psychotropic medication can be an important component of their mental health treatment plan.  For students needing psychotropic medication, TAMUK Student Health and Wellness Counseling Services believes that an integrated treatment plan should include regular meetings with both a clinician and the psychiatrist with communication between these providers.

In partnership with Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) Department of Psychiatry, Student Health and Wellness Counseling Services offer Psychiatry Telehealth Services to currently enrolled Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) students who are actively engaged in ongoing counseling services through SHW Counseling Services.

  • Referrals and appointments are made through SHW Counseling Services.
  • To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled at TAMUK and actively participate in counseling services through TAMUK Student Health and Wellness.
  • Initial psychiatry appointments/intakes are offered each week, excluding A&M System holidays through secure video-conferencing.
  • An initial telepsychiatry appointment is 1 hour. Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes.
  • There is no cost to the student for the appointment. However, the client may be responsible for charges associated with the cost of prescribed medication.
  • There may be a $50 charge for missed appointments, late arrivals, and late cancellations to the student’s TAMUK account (see below).
  • The psychiatrist cannot provide refills on medications prescribed by another provider.
  • If a student is in counseling with an off-campus counseling provider or is only interested in medication without counseling treatment, SHW Counseling Services cannot provide psychiatric care but can assist with a referral to a community provider for medication evaluation/management. Psychiatric services are limited and are by appointment only through a secure video conferencing portal.
