Graduating with Honors

(For Undergraduate degrees only)

Grade point averages are not rounded to meet honors thresholds.

Most colleges offer academic honors to recognize students who graduate with outstanding scholastic achievement. These distinctions set high-achieving students apart within their graduating class.

  • An overall institutional grade point average of 3.8 is the minimum for graduation Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors)
  • An overall institutional grade point average of 3.6 or higher, but less than 3.8 will merit Magna Cum Laude (with high honors)
  • An overall institutional grade point average of 3.4 or higher but less than 3.6 will merit Cum Laude (with honors)

Students who have transferred work from other colleges or universities are eligible for graduation with honors provided they have completed at least 45 institutional semester hours of work at Texas A&M University - Kingsville. Only coursework completed at Texas A&M University - Kingsville is used to determine eligibility for graduation with honors.

University Latin Medals

University Latin Medals are awarded at the Academic Achievement Ceremony (AAC) and are intended to be worn during Commencement.

Eligibility for Latin Medals is based on the student's institutional GPA and institutional earned hours (minimum 45 hours) using grades posted at the end of the semester prior to the semester of graduation.

The honors recognized at the AAC are preliminary. Final honors designations, which include grades from the semester of graduation, will be reflected on the student's official transcript and diploma.

Academic Achievement Ceremony (AAC)

The University hosts the Academic Achievement Ceremony (AAC), where Latin Medals are awarded. This is a separate ceremony from Commencement. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Students will receive an email invitation approximately one month prior to Commencement. The invitation will be sent to the student's @students.tamuk.edu email account by the Honors College. Students should RSVP using the link provided in the invitation.

The AAC is typically held in:

  • Jones Auditorium for Fall and Spring ceremonies
  • MSUB Ballroom A for Summer (August) ceremonies

The ceremony time will be included in the invitation. The AAC is scheduled to allow students and their guest to attend Commencement ceremonies without conflict.

Students should not wear cap and gown attire to the AAC and are encouraged to dress in business or business casual attire. During the ceremony, students will cross the stage to receive their medal and certificate and will have an opportunity for photos following the ceremony.

Students who do not attend the AAC may pick up their medal at the Honors College, located in Jernigan Library, Room 208, beginning the Monday after Commencement.

If final grades change a student's honors designation, they may bring an updated transcript to the Honor's College to exchange their medal for appropriate level.

Presidential Medal

The Presidential Medal is awarded to students who demonstrate consistent academic excellence.

To qualify, students must earn a grade point average of 3.65 or higher across at least four semesters at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, with a minimum of 13 credit hours completed in each of those semesters.
