Honors College

Class Requirements

Each semester, the Honors student picks one (or two) classes to take as Honors.

  • Classes can be degree track requirements or ones of special interest to you
  • The rumor that all classes have to be taken as Honors is not true.
  • However, the students in the Honors College must take at least one class as Honors each and every fall and spring semester at TAMUK. Additional Honors credits can be obtained in the summer but are not required.
  • The only exception is the final semester if the student has obtained a minimum of 15 Honors institutional credits.
  • All Honors courses must be passed with a “C” or better.
  • It doesn’t matter if a student takes more than one Honors class a semester. That does not replace the need to take an Honors class ever and every semester.
  • Special circumstances can be applied on a case-to-case basis. For example Honors students who are athletes who travel during the majority of a semester will need to work out a class sequence schedule with Honors College staff.
  • All exceptions have to be approved by the Honors College staff.

There are two ways to earn Honors credit.

  1. Honors sections: These TAMUK courses are open only to Honors College students.  They are taught in ways that transcend the traditional lecture, allowing for more interaction between the individual student, faculty and fellow Honors students.
  2. Honors credit by contract: Students may contract with a Professor to earn Honors credit for a non-Honors course.  The basis of the contract is a project on a topic that will not be covered otherwise in the class, therefore providing in-depth training.

In both cases, the Honors student would register officially for the Honors course section which will then be noted on their transcript.
