Honors Independent Project (HIP)
What is the HIP?
The Honors Independent Project (HIP) is a culminating experience that allows you to explore a topic of interest through research, creative work, or applied practice.
The HIP is completed individually and represents your ability to think critically, engage deeply with a subject, and produce meaningful work in your field.
What to Expect
The HIP is designed to:
- Allow you to explore a topic in depth
- Strengthen research, communication, and critical thinking skills
- Create a meaningful academic or professional portfolio piece
- Prepare you for graduate school or career opportunities
Culminate your experience by presenting your work to an academic or professional audience
What Can a HIP Look Like?
HIP projects are flexible and can take many forms, including:
- Undergraduate research
- Creative projects (art, writing, performance, etc.)
- Industry, technical, or historical analysis
- Applied or field-based work
Projects are designed to align with your academic interests, career goals, and areas of curiosity.
How Do I Choose a HIP Topic?
Your HIP can grow from a variety of academic, professional, and personal experiences.
Many students develop their project ideas through:
- Coursework or Honors Contracts
- Internships or professional experiences
- Research opportunities or laboratory work
- Study abroad or global experiences
- Competitions, performances, or exhibitions
Your project should reflect your interests, goals, and the direction you want to explore further.
Working with a Project Advisor
Each HIP is completed under the guidance of a project advisor.
- Advisors may be TAMUK faculty or qualified professionals outside the university
- Advisors support the development of your project and provide feedback throughout the process
- Advisors help ensure your work meets Honors-level expectations
Presenting Your HIP
As part of the Honors College graduation requirements, all students present their Honors Independent Project during the Honors College Symposium.
- The Symposium provides an opportunity to share your work with faculty, peers, and the campus community
- This experience allows you to communicate your ideas and showcase your accomplishments
The Symposium serves as the culminating celebration of your Honors experience.
