Engineering Jumpstart

Get a jump start on your college journey!

Why wait until fall? We are giving you the opportunity to take summer courses, get comfortable with Blackboard (your online learning portal), and earn college credits, all at no cost to you!

How it Works:

Choose one or two courses to receive 3-6 credit hours toward your degree! Classes are during Summer Session I (June 1-July 3, 2026) & Summer Session II (July 6-August 6, 2026).

Approximate Cost savings:
3 credit hours =  $1,400 saved
6 credit hours = $2,400 saved

Course Offerings

Summer I (June 1-July 3, 2026)

  • College Algebra (MATH 1314): Monday-Friday 9:00-10:40 a.m.
    • College-level topics in algebra including functions, graphs, variation, piecewise defined functions, equations of lines, elementary curve fitting, quadratic equations and functions, systems of linear and nonlinear equations, composition of functions, inverse functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and applications related to these topics
  • ALEKS Prep for Math Placement: Monday-Friday 11:00-12:00 p.m.
    • ALEKS placement determines which Mathematics course a student should start with. For Engineering majors, it is important to get to Calculus as soon as reasonably possible. The ALEKS preparation sessions will prepare you for the ALEKS placement so that you can potentially skip over some Mathematics courses and go directly into Calculus.
  • Engineering as a Career (GEEN 1201): Monday-Friday 4:00-5:00 p.m.
    • Overview of the history of engineering, its disciplines and professional practice with emphasis on social responsibility and ethical behavior. Introduces each engineering discipline using three-week modules. It also provides basic skills, tools and techniques applied to problem solving, teamwork and communication necessary for academic and professional success.

Summer II (July 6-August 6, 2026)

    • Precalculus (MATH 2412): Monday-Friday 12:00-2:10 p.m.
      • Study fundamental concepts of algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry to prepare for calculus. Explore functions, equations, and their graphs in Cartesian and polar coordinates; analyze polynomials and their zeros; and apply exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Solve trigonometric equations, work with inverse trigonometric functions, and use the laws of sines and cosines to solve triangles. Investigate circles, conic sections, complex numbers, and vectors, including dot and cross products.

Prerequisite: Placement through Multiple Measures, successful completion of MATH 1314 with a grade of C or better, or qualifying score on the Department of Mathematics placement exam.

      Jumpstart FAQ

      Who is eligible to apply?

All incoming Fall 2026 freshmen who are Texas residents and attend a Hoggie Days registration session on or before June 1, 2026.

Should I submit my Jumpstart application before attending Hoggie Days?

Yes. Applying before your Hoggie Days session allows you to register for the course that same day. If you’ve already attended Hoggie Days, you can still apply until June 1, 2026.

What are the steps to enroll in Javelina Jumpstart?

      1. Submit the application on this page.

      2. Your academic advisor will review your application.

      3. If approved, you will get an email letting you know you can register for courses.

Are there any costs for participating in Javelina Jumpstart?

Yes. Textbooks and parking passes are not covered by the program. Tuition and fees are covered by TAMUK, but you may briefly see charges on your account while Financial Aid processes the payment.

If you have questions about charges, contact Dr. Jeffrey Glick at jeffrey.glick@tamuk.edu.

Do I need to complete the 2025–2026 FAFSA to participate?

Yes. Your 2025–2026 FAFSA will be used toward your Jumpstart course bill before TAMUK covers the remaining cost.

You will also need to complete the 2026–2027 FAFSA to receive federal aid for the Fall 2026 semester.

Who can help me with FAFSA or financial aid questions?

Contact Alejandro Solis in the Financial Aid office at Alejandro.solis@tamuk.edu or 361-593-3030.

Why might an application not be approved?

An application may not be approved if:

      • You already have credit for the requested course
      • Taking the course would prevent you from having a full course load in the Fall
Do I have to live on campus while taking my course?

No. Living on campus is not required. You may live on campus if it is more convenient, but housing costs are not covered by the program.

What happens if I fail a Javelina Jumpstart course?

You will not be placed on scholastic probation for the Fall semester. You may repeat the course in a future semester, but the Jumpstart program will not cover the cost of retaking it.

Students may also use the grade exclusion policy to improve their GPA. Your academic advisor can provide more details.
