Dr. Kyle Millsap, Assistant Professor of Music


Kyle Millsap is an international award-winning artist and Associate Professor of Trumpet & Jazz at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Along with overseeing the trumpet program, Dr. Millsap directs Jazz Band II, the TAMUK Trumpet Ensemble, the Jazz Trumpet Ensembles, and performs with the Kingsville Brass Quintet.

His playing has been hailed as having “superb style, [a] gorgeous sound, and masterful intonation.” (ITG) He has had the opportunity to perform with a diverse array of artists and ensembles across the musical spectrum. Orchestral credits include the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (TN), Orquesta Sinfonica UANL (Monterrey, MX), Victoria Symphony Orchestra (TX), Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra (TX), Wichita Symphony Orchestra (KS), and Ballet Memphis (TN). In the jazz and commercial music realms, he has performed with artists including Doc Severinsen, Vince DiMartino, The Temptations, Mannheim Steamroller, Il Divo, Johnny Mathis, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Al Kapone, multiple events for Elvis Presley Enterprises, and at halftime for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies. Theater credits include performances for numerous national touring companies.

He has performed and/or given presentations at the International Trumpet Guild Conference, International Horn Symposium, College Music Society and National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors national conferences, and the Texas and Tennessee Music Educators Association conventions, in addition to masterclasses and recitals throughout the United States and Europe. His pedagogical articles and music reviews are published in the ITG Journal and NACWPI Journal. He also serves on the Editorial Committee of Trompete, the journal of the Associação Brasileira de Trompetistas.

Through his career, he has commissioned and premiered several new works for trumpet. In 2018, he released his debut album Scatter the Darkness, which features several of these commissions and received a silver medal in the Global Music Awards. His own compositions and arrangements have been published through Brass Arts Unlimited, Cimarron Music, and Triplo Press.

His students have been accepted into the nation’s top graduate programs and gone on to successful careers as performers and music educators, teaching at all levels of primary, secondary, and university music programs.

Dr. Millsap holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Memphis, Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, and Bachelor of Music degree from Wichita State University.
