Dr. Alexander Sanchez-Behar, Associate Professor of Music


Associate Professor of Music Theory

Alexander Sanchez-Behar is an Associate Professor of Music Theory at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He received his B.A. in music from the University of California, Berkeley, M.M. in music theory from Northwestern University, and Ph.D. in music theory from Florida State University. Prior to his arrival at TAMUK, Dr. Sanchez-Behar was an associate professor of music theory and composition at Ashland University, where he taught all levels of the music theory and aural skills core curriculum. His research focuses on minimalism, with a particular emphasis in the music of John Adams. He has presented music-theory papers at annual conferences of the Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Southeast and the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, and has published his research in American MusicAmerican Music TeacherMusic Theory SpectrumIndiana Theory Review, Ritmo, and Tempo, among others. Dr. Sanchez-Behar has served on the Society for Music Theory Committee on Diversity in 2008–2011. He also serves his discipline as a reader for the College Board’s Advanced Placement exam in music theory.
