Texas A&M University-Kingsville is concerned about the health, safety and welfare of its students, staff and faculty. The Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) was established to provide assistance to members who are experiencing stressful or difficult situations.

The role of the BIT is to provide early intervention and support to individuals who may display behavior that causes reason for concern for the welfare of the individual or university community. The BIT will focus primarily on students who may be exhibiting signs of pending problems. The group will also monitor issues relating to faculty, staff and campus visitors.  

The BIT is an interdisciplinary committee of university officials that meets to discuss incidents or behaviors that are of concern and to ensure a coordinated university response. The team consists of the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs/Dean of Students, the Associate Dean of Students, the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police, the Director of Student Health and Wellness, the Executive Director of University Housing and Residence Life, the Director of Student Activities, the Executive Director of Human Resources, the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the Executive Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation. Other staff and university resources may be utilized to assist and provide expertise to the team as needed.  

The team typically meets once a month, but if necessary more times, depending on a “need’ basis. It will review reports of incidents or referrals from the University Police Department and the campus community. The BIT will work closely with the university’s Emergency Management Team in high risk situations involving individual(s) who pose a potential risk of harm to persons or property in the University Community or are a substantial disruption to the educational process. The BIT will advise the Chief Student Affairs Officer on critical incidents and will make recommendations to the Chief Student Affairs Officer and other university officials regarding the appropriate action to take depending upon the nature of the concern addressed and in accordance with the university’s Student Code of Conduct and applicable campus regulations.
