TCCNS Core Curriculum Updates
Following careful review of the University’s core curriculum (the required 42 semester credit hours in general education) this spring, we are moving a number of existing core courses to the Texas Common Course Numbering System (TCCNS) with corresponding course titles. Effective this fall, this change will introduce six new course prefixes to our course inventory for core curriculum courses only. Below are a few examples of the changes being made for the fall semester:
- ENGL 1302 Rhetoric and Composition 🡪 ENGL 1302 Composition II
- BIOL 1306 General Biology 🡪 BIOL 1306 Biology for Science Majors I
- MUSI 1305 Explorations of Music History 🡪 MUSI 1306 Music Appreciation
- PHYS 1304 Solar System 🡪 ASTR 1304 Solar System
- PHYS 1375 Physics 🡪 PHYS 1305 Elementary Physics
- POLS 2301 Government & Politics of U.S. 🡪 GOVT 2302 Federal Government

Starting June 11, students currently enrolled in fall courses will be migrated automatically to new course sections reflecting the updates. Please note—students do not have to take any action at this time and these changes will not affect their schedules. Similarly, the changes will not affect faculty teaching assignments.
Migrating to TCCNS:
- Supports community college and dual credit advising and transfer,
- Ensures greater transparency in course equivalencies, and
- Corresponds with the ‘clean core’ initiative that permits greater flexibility for core curriculum completion, which collectively help reduce time-to-degree for our students.
