Dr. Kyle Millsap


Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz

Dr. Kyle Millsap (D.M.A. - University of Memphis, M.M. - University of North Texas, B.M. Wichita State University) is an international award-winning artist and Professor of Trumpet & Jazz at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. In his position at TAMUK, he leads the trumpet studio, directs Jazz Band I, and teaches courses in jazz history, trumpet pedagogy, and trumpet literature. 

His playing has been hailed as having superb style, [a] gorgeous sound, and masterful intonation.” (ITG) In 2018, he released his debut album Scatter the Darkness, which features several of these commissions and received a silver medal in the Global Music Awards. In March 2022, he released his newest single Monolith for trumpet and elections. He has performed with a diverse array of artists and ensembles across the musical spectrum. He is a member of the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra (TX) and Victoria Symphony Orchestra (TX). Other orchestral credits include the Monterrey Symphony Orchestra (MX), Memphis Symphony Orchestra (TN), and Wichita Symphony Orchestra (KS). In the jazz and commercial music realms he has performed with artists including Doc Severinsen, The Temptations, Mannheim Steamroller, Il Divo, Johnny Mathis, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Al Kapone, multiple events for Elvis Presley Enterprises, and at halftime for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies. 

In addition to masterclasses and performances in North America and Europe, he has performed and/or given presentations at international, national, and state-level music conferences. He is author of two trumpet books, Modern Warm-Up Method for Trumpet and 30 Melodic Etudes for Low Trumpet available from Wavefront Music, as well as several other trumpet duets and ensemble works. His students have been accepted into the nation’s top graduate programs and gone on to successful careers as performers and music educators, teaching at all levels of primary, secondary, and university music programs.  

The TAMUK Trumpet Studio is a vibrant studio of 35-40 students and frequently performs at state, national, and international events. They are regularly invited to perform/compete at the Texas Music Educators annual convention, the National Trumpet Competition, and the International Trumpet Guild conference.
