Javelina softball team ranked 19th in nation
KINGSVILLE - March 07, 2007
KINGSVILLE, Texas (March 7, 2006) – The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas have been rewarded for their 18-7 start by being ranked 19th in this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II poll.
The Javelinas are tied with the University of South Carolina-Upstate for the 19th spot and are one of 8 teams appearing in this week’s first regular season poll after not being ranked in the preseason top 25.
The Javelinas will take their unbeaten LSC record (4-0) on the road this week as they face preseason LSC South Division favorite and defending champion Abilene Christian.
The Wildcats are 12-8 and 2-2 in the LSC South.
Jake Schumann won his 100th game as head coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville last week as the Javelinas won 5 of 6 games including a 4-game sweep of West Texas A&M to improve to 18-7 and 4-0 in league play.
While Schumann’s squads have been known for their offensive prowess, it’s pitching that’s getting it done in 2007.
The Javelinas lead the Lone Star Conference in team earned run average with a 1.80 mark.
Both Natalie Jones and Nora Aguilar (Harlingen) are ranked in the top
7 in the conference in earned run average.
Aguilar has been on fire of late, posting a 6-0 mark with 6 complete games and a 1.00 ERA in her last 6 starts.
During that stretch she has struck out 49 in 42 innings and opponents are batting just .184 against her.
The Javelinas have won 9 of their last 11, batting .304 as a team and have out-scored their opponents 52-23.
A pair of junior college transfers in their second season are red hot.
Quesha Torres is tied for the league lead in home runs with 6 and is batting .419 with a team-leading 25 runs batted in. Last year after transferring from Western Oklahoma College, Torres batted .372 with 9 home runs and a team-leading 49 RBI.
Joanna Dorado is second in the team in hitting at .416 with a conference-leading 9 doubles. Last year she batted .263 with 30 RBI after transferring from El Paso Community College.
During the recent 11-game span, Torres is batting .452 with 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 11 RBI.
