The art, communications and theatre department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville will celebrate the Day of the Dead with events spanning two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct., 29-30. All events will take place in or around the Drama Art Building or the Speech Building. All workshops will be presented by A&M-Kingsville art professor Santa Barraza and renowned artist Mary Jane Garza.

Tuesday brings three art workshops, all in room 118 of the Drama Art Building. First will be a papel picado workshop from 8:30 to 10:50 a.m., followed by a decorating skulls workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and finally a waxed flowers workshop from 2 to 5 p.m.

Wednesday will open with a workshop for elementary students from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

The Day of the Dead altar and artwork will be installed in front of the Speech Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An opening reception will be held at 5 p.m. and the ceremony for the altar will begin at 5:30 p.m. 

A group of Aztec dancers, Papalotzin Ehecatl, will perform at 6 p.m. with all the festivities ending at 7 p.m.

The public is invited to participate in the altar installation and placement of artifacts for loved ones. Call 361-593-3401 to participate.
