Developing campus housing that creates a living and learning environment that supports academic success is paramount to our ability to recruit and retain students.
The new residence hall is the first one built on campus in nearly 40 years. The Turner-Bishop residence hall complex was built in 1971. “This new residence hall will give our students new, modern and up-to-date housing accommodations,” said Tom Martin, director of residence life.
Martin said current A&M-Kingsville students would be given first priority when signup for the new residence hall begins.
It will be 210,000 square feet, housing 600 beds in two- and four-bedroom suites. Each suite will have one or two bathrooms depending on the design and a living room and kitchenette. The new residence hall will have study labs, a large lounge and meeting rooms, wireless internet, cable television and on-site mail boxes.
“Research shows students really want suite-style living units,” Dr. Terisa Remelius, Vice President for Student Affairs, said. “The new housing complex will provide a lot of space indoors and outdoors which can foster a sense of community. The suites allow students private bedrooms and small, shared living rooms which provide a better environment for studying.”
Safety also is important when building new living areas for students. “Students and parents are always interested in campus safety. Our new building will provide multiple layers of security in order to reassure students and parents that safety is our number one priority,” Remelius added.
The architect for the project is BOKA Powell, the firm that designed Texas Stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys. They also have designed residence halls at Texas Tech, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at El Paso and University of Texas at San Antonio. The general contractor is SpawGlass.
