Holmium was announced as Element X in 1878 were the spectral absorption bands of holmium bands were noticed. Holmium is relatively soft and malleable, and is stable in dry air at room temperature, but oxidizes quickly in moist air and even at elevated temperatures.  The metal has unusual magnetic properties and few uses have been found for this element.
