Antimony was probably used much earlier than the 17th century and was known as a metal.

Antimony greatly increases the hardness and strength of lead.  Antimony is also used in the production of tracer bullets, small arms, and batteries.  Exposure to Antimony should be limited because Antimony is toxic.
