Art Program

Dr. Manuel Flores, Department Chair

Dr. FloresThe Department of Communications and Theatre Arts is merging with the Department of Art. The new name of the department will be The Department of Art, Communications and Theatre (ACT) starting Sept. 1, 2011.

The merger came about for two reasons: (1) budgetary cutbacks at the state level necessitated consolidation of several departments at Texas A&M-Kingsville and (2) the link between Communications and Theatre Arts and the Art department is a natural fit as communications continues to evolve because of technology. The integration of visual arts and communication continues to occur in both fields. Both areas of study form a mutually beneficial partnership, strengthening the type of well-rounded education we are able to provide our students, equipping them with a diverse skill set.

The Art Program provides Art Majors with a comprehensive emersion in studio art that prepares students for an entry-level position in the world of art. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program is tailored to two groups. The first (BFA) equips students with the requisite skills to continue with graduate studies.  The BFA with an Education Certification provides students with the visual skills to pursue a public school art teaching career.  A Bachelors of Arts degree is also offered for students who wish to double major in another discipline or focus on a more broadly based liberal arts education. The art program is comprised of core a group of foundation courses that all art students must complete. This core group of classes also fulfills the fine arts requirements for university general education requirements. Emphases in graphic design, painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture are available.

A Message from the Director of the Art Program

Charles WissingerI feel that the Art Department has maintained its identity while opening new doors for our expertise, our work and our passion. We have worked closely with COMM-TA faculty, staff and students in the past and this (merger)will only help enhance our relationship. We are ready to be part of a strong and energetic team.
