Providing Undergraduates Resources to Advancement (PURA) Familia


 

 

 

Purpose  Hispanic Serving Institutions Program

The Department of Education Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Program provides grants to assist Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) to expand educational opportunities for, and improve the academic attainment of, Hispanic students. HSI Program grants also enable HSIs to expand and enhance the academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability of colleges and universities that are educating the majority of Hispanic college students and help large numbers of Hispanic students and other low-income individuals complete postsecondary degrees.

PURA Familia PROJECT

Texas A&M University-Kingsville received a five year Title V grant from the US Department of Education starting October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2029 through a competitive grant process. The Fostering Pathways to Success (FP2S) grant project will provide students and TAMUK Stakeholders with pathways that foster retention, persistence and completion to graduation through student-centered high-impact practices.

Goal 1 includes five activity objectives that include faculty-student undergraduate research partnerships, hands-onlearning experiences, providing guidance for transfer students as the transition to a four-year institution andopportunities to participate in professional development that directly impacts student relationships. This goal will beachieved through the following objectives: a) Fostering a sense of belonging: Providing social, emotional, and academic learning activities. b) Enhance undergraduate research: this will be accomplished by increasing participation inundergraduate research through a faculty course redesign program. c) Faculty and staff will also participate in high-impact practices professional development, focusing on asset-based mindsets and the importance of familyengagement in student academic success. d) The transfer students will be invited to participate in support activitiesand resources to aid them in their transition from a two-year institution and follow them through to graduation.

Goal 2 provides students with financial and academic support. This will be achieved by providing merit-basedscholarship assistance to returning sophomores and juniors for the fall semester, that will reduce their financialbarriers to continue enrollment. Furthermore, second-year TAMUK students will receive technology assistance,ensuring necessary access to digital tools for their secondary enrollment achievement.
