AIDS Policy
AIDS Policy
Senate Bill 959, passed in the 71st Texas Legislature, specifies that workplace guidelines be promulgated to assure that the rights and privileges of individuals infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (“HIV”) are protected. Pursuant to that requirement and in recognition of the serious nature of HIV and related health issues in the work and learning environment, the following guidelines and policies are established for The Texas A&M University System (the “System”).
Human Immunodeficiency Virus cripples the body’s ability, through the immune system, to fight infection. Once infected with HIV, a person may remain without symptoms for a long period of time, but is able to infect others through sexual or direct blood contact. As the disease progresses, the immune system can become so weakened that a person may eventually develop life-threatening infections and cancers. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (“AIDS”) is the final stage of HIV infection.
Non-Discrimination
No student, employee, or applicant will be denied access to educational programs, employment, or services, or otherwise be subject to discrimination or harassment on the basis of HIV infection or AIDS status. All individuals living with HIV or AIDS retain all rights, privileges, and services afforded to any member of the System community.
Confidentiality
All medical information concerning the HIV status of students or employees will be handled in strict confidence and in accordance with applicable federal and state laws. Such information will not be disclosed without the prior written consent of the individual, except as otherwise required by law.
Education and Prevention
The System is committed to providing accurate, current information about HIV infection and AIDS to all students and employees. Educational materials regarding the nature, transmission, and prevention of HIV infection are made available as part of new student and employee orientation, and through ongoing educational programs and campus health services.
Resources and Support
Students and employees seeking additional information or support regarding HIV/AIDS may contact the campus health center, Student Health and Wellness, the Dean of Students Office, or the Office of Human Resources. The System provides access to counseling, testing, referrals, and other relevant support services.
